Clive
Cussler was an advertising man when he decided to try his hand at fiction.
He read some of the bestsellers of the day and determined that he could do
better, so he created Dirk Pitt (named after his son, not the other way around).
Cussler knew it was tough to break in, so he decided to even the odds a bit.
As an advertising guy, he knew that presentation was everything. With that
in mind, he created some nice letterhead for a Hollywood agent who did not exist
and typed up a letter to a New York agent posing as said non-existent Hollywood
agent saying he had found a new author, but as you might remember, he was
retiring and really only worked in film, and would the New York agent be
interested in representing the new author? The New York agent agreed to
take a look and Clive managed to land an agent. As the story goes, after
Raise the Titanic was a huge bestseller, Clive confessed to his ruse and his
agent laughed and said he thought maybe he'd met the Hollywood agent at a
cocktail party and had been too drunk to remember it.
In any case, Clive Cussler has been lodged at the top of the bestseller chart for more than three decades now. Critics may attack him for his prose or for some of his characters coming off a bit flat, but one thing everyone can agree on is that Cussler is a master at plotting. Here at the database, we think Cussler is actually a good writer--he was adding strong women characters to his action novels early on and continues to do so. And when it comes to sheer plotting, there's nobody else who can come close.
