Robert
Crais grew up in Louisiana on a steady diet of comic books and novels. His
first national publication was on the letters page of an issue of The Amazing
Spider-Man. After attending the Clarion Writer's Workshop, he sold two
short stories. After the second story sold for a whopping fifty bucks, he
figured the first sale wasn't a fluke and he decided to skip a regular career as
an engineer and instead moved to Los Angeles to seek his fortune writing
television. He soon started selling scripts and ended up writing for tv
shows including Baretta, Miami Vice, L.A. Law, Cagney & Lacey and many others.
Television paid well, but didn't fulfill him, so he turned to writing novels. His most popular books are about Elvis Cole, a wise-cracking private investigator in Los Angeles. The books took a more serious turn with L.A. Requiem when Crais really ramped up the characters, plotting, writing, style and gave the series much more depth and resonance. L.A. Requiem remains one of our favorite novels here at the database.
Hollywood has tried to purchase the film rights to the Cole series, but Crais will never sell them, so you don't have to worry about seeing Keanu Reeves as Elvis Cole and Carrot Top as Joe Pike. It's not going to happen, sports fans.

The first book about Joe Pike specifically. Yes, Elvis Cole appears, but the story is all Pike. A terrific book! |
|
Of the stand-alone thrillers, this one is our favorite so far.
